Donald Hobern, "The delicate world of plume moths"
Donald Hobern is an amateur lepidopterist and Vice-President of Moths and Butterflies Australia. He is also an internationally recognised biodiversity informatics specialist and was the inaugural director of the Atlas of Living Australia.
Donald has a particular interest in the beautiful plume moths (Pterophoridae) and many-plume moths (Alucitidae). Their name derives from the fact that most species have their wings divided into narrow lobes that resemble feathers or “plumes” because of the long fringe scales along the lobe margins.
Donald’s presentation will focus on Victorian plume moth species, with some details on the wider Australian and global diversity of this large family. He has studied their life cycles, noting particular features of the caterpillar and pupa stages associated with their host plants.
