GSB 2023 is almost here!

Join the fun 24th - 27th November

The Great Southern Bioblitz 2023 is only days away. We encourage you to record observations of as many species of flora and fauna as you can with phone or camera during the 4-day bioblitz period and load these on to iNaturalist. Information on how to use iNaturalist can be found here. You have until the 10th December to load and identify your observations, however the photos or sound recordings must have been made between 24th and 27th November.

Sightings made within Mt Alexander Shire or the eastern half of Hepburn Shire will be automatically included in our Castlemaine project. Visit Great Southern Bioblitz 2023: Castlemaine Region to see a map of the area covered and more information about the Bioblitz. Once the Bioblitz starts, this page will show our progressive tally of observations and species recorded.

Last year there were major gaps in the area where sightings were made as you can see on our GSB 2022 project. This year let’s try and fill those gaps along the Loddon River and the northern and eastern edges of Mt Alexander Shire. There also weren’t many sightings from our part of Hepburn Shire so how about a drive down to Glen Lyon, Wombat Forest, Trentham or around Daylesford. With the warmer and drier conditions around Castlemaine these cooler and wetter forests might be rewarding.

And finally, a challenge – last year we recorded 2180 sightings of 626 species. Can we beat this? Over to you.
